Speaking Engagement for Women's Conference, Beyond Rubies

On March, 18th, 2008, I was asked to speak for Beyond Rubies, a women's conference back in Cedar Rapids, IA, near my hometown of Dundee, Iowa.

About 500 women came together for two days of empowerment. The speakers went thru a screening process pending subject material, relevance, and capitalizing on this years theme. and I was selected!

My mom and girlfriend, Kristin came to support me. Kristin was awesome getting thru some of her fears of speaking in front of people. Reminded me of myself just a few short years ago!

My workshop was "Connecting the Dots to your Vision" and I rec'd some great feedback.

One woman in particular really served me with her honest feedback. She commented that my concepts sounded great, however unrealistic for most, because people simply don't get to go after what they want when they have others relying on them.
WOW! I knew the exact woman who authored the comment. She was having a hard time allowing herself permission to dream of her own goals, and creating a vision for herself. She was resistant to the idea that the true way to be happy is to fill your own cup first so that it overflows to the rest of the world. She seemed to be a very sad, lonely person. And with reason allowing her self no rights to her own life. It served me so much, as I realized that I could have tailored more to the audience I was speaking for.
I am used to being in the environment of and speaking to people who get energized by setting their own goals and going for them. With only having an hour and half timeframe, I skipped right to the how to, and left out the WHY to. I forgot that the majority of people don't set goals, I find the statistics staggering. and then remember, I was a person that didn't set goals.
I learned how to do that in my late twenties!

It was an eye opener and a reminder to how grateful I am, and fortunate that I get to be the evidence and the demonstration!!!
